What are the downsides to your chosen career?

When considering a career it is important to understand what the job entails. The career you imagine may not be all you expect it to be.

An article by the Guardian Loved the teaching, hated the paperwork‘ highlights this point well. Your motivation for pursuing a career may have downsides which if you had been aware of may have caused you to evaluate the career focus.

In pursuing a career you will first of all require the right qualifications. Studying is a major investment in time and financially. There is always an opportunity cost to a decision and it is important for future success that you are motivated in your career route.

Try to find out all you can about the career you wish to follow. How?

  • Read articles and watch videos about the job or career
  • Speak to people in the role – often your personal network will have links you can utilise
  • Partake in work experience in the area – see for yourself!

Doing the above will help you build up a picture. Business and jobs sectors do vary so be cautious in your research when looking at courses that have wide utilisation such as marketing, finance and business courses.
